Oxford & Cambridge Sailing Society take Oxford Magnum Trophy

The Oxford and Cambridge Sailing Society team were victorious at the Oxford Magnum in challenging conditions

Rear Commodore Lottie Rapson writes:

The weekend of the 19th-30th November saw the return of the prestigious Oxford Magnum to Farmoor reservoir. This year we were very pleased to welcome the Doshisha University Yacht Club team, travelling all the way from Japan to compete as part of the 11th triennial exchange between our two universities. The Saturday saw extremely light winds but thanks to the determination of the race officers and competitors every team completed two races. Sunday morning brought wind but also fog meaning that racing could not begin until nearly midday. Thanks to the determination and efficiency of Oxford helpers and the race officers over 80 races were completed on what turned out to be a perfect afternoon of sun and moderate winds.

Every team got in some great racing with Society emerging the winners on eight wins from eight races, closely followed by West Kirby Hawks in second and Cambridge University in third. The victorious team, comprising largely of recent Oxford alumni, gratefully received their prize – a magnum of champagne. We would like to thank the umpire team lead by Chief Umpire Greg Eaton, Race Officers Keith Sammons and Jo Lucas and OUYC Events Secretary Méli Besse for working so hard to run as much high quality racing as possible despite the weather’s best efforts!
